cost to play

i got a question. what is the maximum amount of money some of you rappers are willing to pay to get a feature from a national artist? and.... what do you think the benefits of featuring a national artist on your album are? also.... do you think people get features from well known artists because their A) looking to expand their fanbase B) its been a lifelong dream to work with that artist, or C) because they feel like they'll make themselves look more successful through association. that is my question and also what is the minimum and maximum you should pay for a feature with a regional or local artist? let me know what ya'll think.

  • THE ANSWER IS ALL OF THE ABOVE. NOW, HMM.. ONE CERTAIN LOUISVILLE ARTIST WAS SO OVERSHADOWED BY HIS OWN FEATURES, ALL HE DID WAS ADVERTISE FOR THEM. LIKE ME, I AINT DO NO SONG WIT DRAKE, BUT WHEN I LOAD THAT UP ON MYSPACE N WHATNOT, ALL THEM PUSSY BOYS N GIRLS GONNA GOOGLE DRAKE AND THEN LISTEN...WHICH MY LEAD TO MORE PLAYS, AND BEGINING A FANBASE.THERES A FINE LINE BETWEEN, RIDIN COATTAILS, N PIGGYBACKIN OFFA GOOGLE SEARCH.NOW, IF U CAN GET ON A SONG WITTA NATIONAL ACT, N PROVE U CAN GO BAR FOR BAR, SWAG FA SWAG, THEN THAT FEATURE SHOULD BE JUST AS WILLING TO DO THE SONG WIT YOU.

  • thanks for the responses. the only way i would do a feature with a national artist is if i was in the lab when they laced it and it was dope. fuck that half-steppin', take the money and run, mentality. everytime you committ your voice to music it should be your best. not just i got a car note, let me slap together whatever and send it back......then resell it to somebody else. fuck that. i feel like if your chargin' a reasonable price, and thats what you feel like your worth, who am i to knock it. its a take it or leave it situation. im just sick of every interview with well known rappers the first thing the interviewer asks is "so, who all you got on here"? and the rapper is so used to hearin' it sometimes they aint even got to be asked the question. they just throw it out there off top. no "so what inspired this album?" "how is this different from your last release?" just who you got on there? muhfuckaz aint makin' albums they makin' compilations. free staxx. r.i.p. freedom. lil' darryl, whats up? and cop that no sleep "its a bet" underground mixtape.1

  • i've thought about this a lot lately... i know a couple folks that have done features wit known artist.... usually new artist range 3000-5000 sum bigger artist 7000-10000.... i wouldnt pay em niggaz shyt cuz i fell like im better than 80% of em... LoL (but serious) as far as da local scene... i dont think u should charge others from ur area/hometown for features... i know even when i make it i wouldnt charge as long as that artist is bout they business on they grind its all good... da reason behind it i think is for recognition... success by association.... ppl who dont know will b like "damn, homie got a song wit boosie" or wuteva n think dat mean he made it when all it really mean is he had a couple thousand dollars 2 blow.... personally i think dats a waste... unless u jus have dat 1 undeniable hit which isnt very likely...

  • I think that if a national artist wants to work with me, then we can do that. I wouldnt pay very much...couple hundred ...MAYBE!!! Im not in the market to appeal to the masses by riding anothers coat-tails. I want my music to be appreciated for what it is...hott music, not because Joe SO and So is featured on it. I believe that most artists get that big name feature because (C) it makes them look and appear more succesful. I think that they are hoping for some form of recognition, even if undeserved. As for paying a local artist, I dont know about that. If someone wanted me to feature then that means that they appreciate my skills and I would do it for the cost of 10 copies of the album, after all, thats free promotion for me, right? I would do the same in return, if I feature you, I will be promoting you as I promote myself, therefore, 10 physical copies of the CD should be sufficient.
